The Thornley War Memorial was built in the mid-1950s, in the Market Place, opposite the pit gates, in what was then the centre of the village. The 24 Second World War casualties are inscribed at the lower right side. Note that the Memorial records both residents and employees of the colliery The view above was taken in 2001, prior to the addition of the John Scott Youll VC Memorial and the names of several further casualties from both World Wars.
