High Street, Thornley, Then and Now

The photograph above was taken in the early 1950s. It is a poor quality copy at present, but it does give a good sense of the layout of High Street in relation to the Colliery Inn, which is the large white building at the bottom centre. High Street consisted of the terraced houses to the left and right in the foreground. The pointy roofs to the right rear of the Colliery Inn are pit workshops. The photograph below was taken in December 2005. There are now a row of detached houses to the right, but the left side of High Street is open space. Happily, the Colliery Inn survives as a private house.
